If you run forklifts in a dusty yard, precast plant, quarry, brickworks or timber yard, you will see hydraulic oil weeping down a cylinder rod long before the machine is old enough to justify it.
Is the cause a heavy impact hitting the rod? Not necessarily. Often, it’s fine dust setting on the exposed rod while extended, which then gets dragged back through the wiper seal everytime the cylinder retracts.
Below, we break down how this damage occurs, what the early warning signs look like, and the two practical ways to slow it down.

A cylinder rod has two seals working together at the gland. An outer wiper, sometimes called a scraper or dust seal, is meant to clean the rod as it comes back in. Behind it sits the rod seal, which is the one holding pressure.
Yard dust is finer and harder than the wiper is designed for. Cement dust, silica and stone fines get past the wiper lip and embed themselves in the seal material, which is soft enough to hold them. From that point the seal is no longer a seal. It is an abrasive ring wrapped around a moving rod.
So the seal starts cutting into the chrome plating on the rod. Once the plating is scored, the damage runs the other way as well, because a scored rod chews through every new seal fitted to it.
Because the wear starts on the inside of the seal, not on the visible surface of the rod. By the time you can see a score line on the chrome, the seal behind it has usually been failing for a while.
This is the part most operators get wrong. A cylinder that has just started weeping is not at the beginning of the problem. It is at the point where the seal has finally given up.
It also explains why a reseal sometimes lasts a few weeks and sometimes lasts years. If the rod is still smooth, new seals hold. If the plating is scored or pitted, new seals are consumed at the same rate as the old ones and the leak comes back.
A ring of caked dust sitting right at the gland where the rod enters the cylinder. That is the wiper failing to clear the rod and it shows up before any oil does.
A darkened, damp film on the rod that reappears within a day of wiping it clean. Clean oil on a rod is normal lubrication. Oil that carries dust colour with it is coming from behind the wiper.
Mast drift with a load raised, or a tilt angle that will not hold. That is the rod seal passing fluid internally, and by then a reseal is already overdue.
A split or curled wiper lip, visible if you look at the gland face directly. A damaged wiper means the rod seal behind it is taking the full dust load.
Yes, and it is worth separating from the dust problem. Concrete slurry and wash water are alkaline, and prolonged contact attacks chrome plating directly. Pitted plating does the same thing to seals that scoring does.
Pressure washing aimed straight at the gland also forces water and fines past the wiper, which is the exact path you are trying to keep closed. Wash the machine, but keep the lance off the cylinder ends.
Park with the cylinders retracted. This is the single most effective thing you can do and it costs nothing. Lower the mast fully and set the forks down at the end of every shift, so lift cylinder rods spend the night inside the barrel instead of collecting dust in the open. Tilt cylinder rods stay partly exposed whatever you do, which is why they often leak first.
Wipe the exposed rods with a clean rag as part of the daily check. Not a rag that has been sitting on the workbench collecting the same dust you are trying to remove. A rod wiped clean before it retracts carries far less abrasive back through the seal.
Beyond those two, inspect the wiper lips at each scheduled service and replace them on condition rather than waiting for the rod seal to fail. Wipers are cheap. Rods are not.
Run a fingernail along the rod. If it catches on a score line, a reseal on its own will not hold and the rod needs rechroming or replacement. If the surface is smooth and the leak is recent, a reseal is worth doing and worth doing soon, because every extra hour of running grinds the plating further.
Cylinders that have been leaking for months are also worth checking for a second problem. Oil escaping past the rod seal means contaminated dust and water have had a path into the system, so the hydraulic fluid, the return filter and the tank breather are all suspect at that point.

The hydraulic tank air breather element is tracked on the maintenance management display in the cab, alongside engine oil, oil filter and air cleaner. A clogged breather is the other route dust takes into the hydraulic system, so having the machine count that interval for you rather than relying on someone remembering it removes one gap in the chain.
Durable mast and carriage side rollers come as standard across the range. This matters more than it sounds. Worn side rollers let the mast rack slightly under load, and a racked mast side loads the lift cylinder rods, which puts uneven pressure on the seals and wears them faster on one side. Rollers that hold their tolerance keep the rods running straight.
The undercover is an option on the 110, 130 and 160D-9. It shields the engine and surrounding components from the dust the truck kicks up under itself, which means less airborne material circulating around the machine and settling on exposed rods. Ask about it at quoting stage rather than after the first summer.
Look at the yard fleet tomorrow morning and note which trucks were parked with the mast raised. That habit alone accounts for a meaningful share of the cylinder work most dusty sites pay for, and it is a two minute conversation with the operators rather than a maintenance budget item.
