Forklift Pre-Start Checklist for Australian Sites

A forklift pre-start checklist covers visual checks, operational checks and fuel or battery checks before every shift. October is National Safe Work Month, and many Australian sites use it to refresh daily safety routines. We walk through each check, how fuel types differ and what to do when a forklift fails. Your supervisors can then run the same forklift pre-start checklist across all shifts and machines. Hyundai Forklifts lithium batteries need no watering, which takes one routine check off that list.

Why Do Forklifts Need a Pre-Start Check Every Shift?

A pre-start check confirms the forklift is ready before it moves loads or works near people. Every forklift sees normal wear between services, so a daily check catches small changes while they are easy to fix.
An operator who checks first can stop a small issue from becoming an incident. Each shift needs its own check because conditions change between shifts. Another operator may have used the forklift on a different task overnight.

At the start of the shift, a quick check shows the operator what condition the machine is in. Over time, those checks also support a longer working life for each forklift. A forklift pre-start checklist turns them into a routine every operator follows the same way.

What Should a Forklift Pre-Start Checklist Include?

A forklift pre-start checklist should include visual checks with the forklift off and operational checks once it is running. The visual checks come first, and the operational checks follow once the forklift starts.

Power Item Check for
Off Forks and heels Cracks, bends, wear
Off Mast and chains Damage, slack
Off Hydraulic hoses Leaks, damage
Off Tyres Cuts, chunks, pressure
Off Fluid levels At the marked level
Off Data plate Fitted and readable
Off Seat, seatbelt, guard Secure, undamaged
Off Warning lights Fitted, undamaged
Off Floor below Fresh leaks
On Horn and alarm Both sound clearly
On Lights All working
On Steering Smooth, no play
On Brakes Stop firmly, park holds
On Lift, lower, tilt Smooth movement
On Display No warnings
On Drive and mast No unusual noise

On Hyundai B-X Series forklifts fitted with pedestrian detection, the operational check should also confirm the system is active.

A written or digital record of each check shows supervisors that it happened and what changed over time.

How Do Pre-Start Checks Differ for Electric, LPG and Diesel Forklifts?

The core checks stay the same for every forklift, but each fuel type adds its own items. Which ones apply depends on the machines in your fleet.

Electric forklifts add a quick battery check to the core list. Operators confirm the charge level, look over the connector and cables, and make sure the battery sits secure. Lead-acid batteries also need water checks on the manufacturer’s schedule.

Lithium-ion makes this part of the check simpler. Hyundai Forklifts lithium batteries use a battery management system that monitors voltage, temperature and cell balance in real time. Because they need no watering, the operator only has to glance at the charge level before the shift starts.

LPG forklifts bring a cylinder check. The cylinder should sit correctly in its bracket with the strap fastened. The operator also looks over the hose and coupling for cracks. An operator who smells gas or hears a hiss leaves the forklift off and reports it straight away.

On diesel forklifts, the focus shifts to fuel and the engine. With the engine cold, the operator checks fuel, engine oil and coolant, then looks for leaks around the engine. They also check the air filter indicator where fitted and refuel only in the designated area.

What Happens If a Forklift Fails a Pre-Start Check?

A forklift that fails a pre-start check should stay out of use until a qualified technician repairs the fault. A clear sequence helps stop anyone driving it by mistake.

The operator parks the forklift in a safe spot, removes the key and fits an out-of-service tag. They then report the fault to their supervisor and record it on the checklist.

A qualified forklift technician repairs the fault. The forklift returns to work only after the repair and a fresh pre-start check.

This sequence works better when operators feel confident to report faults. Supervisors can help by treating every report as useful information. Your site procedures, your forklift manual and guidance from Safe Work Australia or your state regulator set the detail for your workplace.

How Do You Set Up a Forklift Pre-Start Checklist for Your Site?

The table above is a starting point for your own forklift pre-start checklist. Each site then adjusts it to its models, fuel types and procedures, with the forklift manual as the reference. A copy kept on or near each forklift lets operators work through it every shift.

Digital records make patterns easier to spot across a fleet, which is where telematics helps. Hyundai Forklifts’ Hi-MATE telematics system tracks machine health and engine hours in real time. Supervisors can use that data alongside daily checks to plan servicing.

Pre-start checks sit alongside good operator habits, regular servicing and broader forklift safety practices. To see how Hyundai forklifts fit your site, contact Hyundai Forklifts or find your nearest dealer.
